Selecting Blinds by Room Decor and Function

Every room in your home, as you know, serves a different purpose, so its important to take those functions into consideration as you choose a blind for every room.
The blinds, shades or window coverings that you select should support and add to the function of the room, as well as add to its overall look.
‘You probably would not use a sliding glass door for your bathroom for obvious reasons, and in the same way, selecting a fabric blind with a dry clean only label probably isn’t the right selection to go on the window above your cooking range.

If you are seeking privacy, for say a bath, or bedroom, then you will want a blind that provides that, not a sheer or transparent one.

You would perhaps select a blind that blocked uv light but permitted viewing if your window faces a magnificent view and no one else can see into it from the bedroom, while if your room faces that window of a neighbor you will want to select a blind that will block their view and offer privacy.

Unlike the bath, your kitchens don’t usually need to be considered for privacy unless you are prone to cooking wearing minimal clothing, which can be dangerous at best, so while you will not be so concerned with privacy you will in fact need to take into consideration other factors such as ease of care.

In a living room, you will perhaps want to cut down the light a bit but not totally darken the room. In this instance a cellular shade or blinds is the perfect way to soften the light, protect your soft furnishings such as curtains and carpet and still not eliminate all the natural lighting in the room.

Enmergy efficient blinds will help you immensely if your goal is to cut your utility bills and retain heat in the wintertime, and block it during the summer.
Energy efficient used to mean bland and boring but that has in fact changed immensely in the past few years, where utilitarian now means lovely elegant and stylish.

Selecting your window blinds to match your decor is simply not as difficult as you’ve been told
Take into account the period or theme of the room.. a colonial one will take wooden blinds, while a bath, which has nautical overtones will easily take a canvas blind, which has the added benefit of being easily water proofed.

Classical, rustic, romantic or modern your style can be found and complemented using one of the sleek blinds that are on the market today.

Winter Energy Savings

Now that we’re headed into wintertime, we are all concerned about our energy consumption and the corresponding utility bills.

Blinds are a great way to achieve a reduction in those bills simply because they block out a great deal of cold which, even with the double hung windows, can still radiate from our windows and cool our rooms, making the furnace work that much harder to give us the desired temperature.

The best blinds for your particular situation will of course be determined by how much air flow you actually have coming in.

I personally had a much older home that was not fitted with double hung windows when I first moved into it.
Being November there really wasn’t time to do the extras  that needed done before the weather hit.
Roller blinds as well as making sure that the caulking and weather stripping were in place was a great solution for me and helped to save us untold amounts of money that first year in a home that was a great deal less than air tight.

Take a walk around your house and if you find places where you can actually feel the cold or cool air entering , those are the places that need attention to detail.

Install weather stripping around your doors and caulk under the windows.

Pay special attention to the outlets which will leak a great deal of cold air in some homes. If you find yours are blowing cold air, there are some little insulators that can be purchased at nearly any home store to install under the outlet cover and insulate those as well.

Purchase a few roller blinds, or aluminium blinds to cover the windows, so they can be drawn down when it is very windy in wintertime or very sunny and hot in the summer time. You will find that while your comfort level goes up, your utility bill goes down.

Both of which make for a very happy holiday.

Layered Effects

Layered Effects in Window Treatments

Window treatments can make the difference in whether your house looks like a home or just a place where you sleep.

They can also change your economic status for the better if you will let them

Layered window treatments have several benefits.

You may choose to use the sheer curtains on the inside of the window sill, with blinds over them, toward the inside, which is effectively having your cake and eating it too.

The sheer curtains afford you that lacy look, which is delicate and ethereal for the romantic night, but not altogether right for when you’d like a bit of privacy or want to blot out the harsh sunlight during the daylight hours. Using lacy curtains which are installed inside the window sills, with the blinds hung over them, particularly if the blinds are of a contrasting color, will allow you the luxury of also using the blinds as a valance of sorts when you wish to have them partially drawn, as seen below.

The use of Roman blinds with a heavier curtain, or roll up blinds under a lighter lace will offer you the benefit of being able to block out double the cold air in the wintertime, since two layers of insulating material is of course superior to having just one.

Below are some examples of how you might use Roman Blinds or the vinyl mini blinds with curtains to double up on the insulating effects they offer.

Blinds, curtains and valances are an attractive choice as well as a practical one.

The valance hides the upper installation aspects of the blind when the curtains are pulled to the side to let in a bit of light.

Slot headed curtains go very well with the vinyl roll up blinds, and can be left open a bit, to enhance, rather than to hide a lovely roll up blind that you’ve added some customizations to such as those in the stenciled blinds items.

Dual treatments at your window do a great deal more than just enhance the room.

They insulate doubly and keep the windows from being a place where the heat escapes as well as complement the other aspects of the room when chosen to reflect the color scheme.
